I hate to admit I was wondering what the water thing was about. It's so dionysusian - the throwing water, the smearing of ashes, mobs of people - all the contact. I don't like to get wet, and I can imagine myself screaming each time I get hit with water. Did you? Did it smell like wet dog and piss the whole time? It's hard to imagine the abandon, but it doesn't sound scary. Loved the movie.

It's so hot that it's sometimes welcoming (after walking around for even 15 minutes in the sun I was like somebody douse me already, and after the third day of this everybody expects to get wet or get powder thrown on them first thing when they walk out the door--the guesthouses even supply you with a wooden drying rack for your clothes. Sometimes, although I rarely found this the case, they perfume the water which sounds pleasant unless you got it in the eyes. hardly anyone blindsights you, if you walk past a water station they usually just respectfuly pour water down your back or the front of your shirt, or maybe sprinkle water on you like a catholic. On the other hand if you're actively participating like the farang with the water pistols, it turns into a water fight. There does seem to be some decorum involved: no dousing of babies and people transporting goods to market. Then again towards the end of the afternoon, after everyone seems waterlogged and good and drunk and the humidity seems to pick up, it does just turn into a free for all.
